Google Maps Works in Korea — Just Not the Way You Expect It To
Most travelers arrive in Korea expecting Google Maps to work the same way it does at home. It opens. The map loads. Seoul appears on screen. Everything looks normal.
Then you try to get walking directions from your hotel to the subway. The route either doesn't appear, or it takes you on a path that doesn't match what's actually on the street. You try driving directions. Nothing useful comes back.
This is not a bug and it is not your phone. Google Maps has a specific limitation in South Korea that affects every foreign visitor who relies on it — and knowing what that limitation is before you arrive changes how you plan your navigation entirely.
Why Google Maps Has Limited Navigation in Korea
South Korea restricts the export of detailed map data for national security reasons. Google has been unable to obtain permission to store Korean mapping data on overseas servers, which is required for Google Maps to generate turn-by-turn walking and driving directions.
The result is a map that displays correctly — you can see roads, buildings, and landmarks — but cannot calculate walking routes or driving directions the way it can in other countries.
Public transit directions (subway routes) do work in Google Maps Korea, because those use publicly available transit data rather than the restricted mapping data. But for anything involving walking from point A to point B, or driving, Google Maps will either fail or give unreliable results.

How to Set Up Naver Maps Before You Arrive
Naver Maps is free and available on both iOS and Android. Download it before your trip — not at the airport after you land.
When you first open Naver Maps, the interface defaults to Korean. Switch it to English by going to Settings (the gear icon) and selecting Language → English. The map will switch to English labels and the interface will follow.
You do not need a Korean phone number or a Naver account to use basic navigation. Open the app, type your destination in English, and Naver Maps will generate walking, transit, and driving directions.
One thing to know: Naver Maps searches work best when you type the Korean name of a place or use the place's exact name as listed in Korean directories. For well-known destinations — Gyeongbokgung Palace, Hongdae, Myeongdong — English names work fine. For smaller restaurants or local spots, copying the Korean name from a review or booking site into the Naver Maps search bar gives more accurate results.
Kakao Maps — the Third Option Worth Knowing
Kakao Maps is another Korean mapping app that works similarly to Naver Maps. It also provides accurate walking and driving directions and has an English interface.
Most travelers find Naver Maps slightly more comprehensive for first-time visitors — particularly for transit information and place listings — but Kakao Maps is a reliable backup and worth having installed alongside Naver Maps.
Kakao Maps is also produced by Kakao, the same company that runs KakaoTalk (Korea's main messaging app) and Kakao T (the taxi booking app). If you already have Kakao T installed for taxis, Kakao Maps integrates naturally with the same ecosystem.
The Practical Setup for Korea Navigation
The most reliable setup for a Korea trip is to run both apps simultaneously:
Google Maps for subway routes and initial place searches — it is the interface most visitors are already comfortable with, and transit directions work correctly.
Naver Maps for walking directions, bus routes, and driving — any situation where you need to move on foot or by road.
This combination covers every navigation situation you will encounter as a first-time visitor to Korea.
