The Comparison That Looks Simple Until You Run the Numbers

KTX: 2 hours 30 minutes. Flight: 1 hour.

Most travelers stop there and book the flight. Then they spend four hours getting to Busan.

Not because anything went wrong. Because a 1-hour domestic flight in Korea comes with roughly 40 to 50 minutes of airport transfer before it, 60 to 90 minutes of check-in and security, and 30 to 40 minutes of arrival transfer after it.

The plane is fast. Everything around it isn't. And for a 1-hour flight, "everything around it" is bigger than the flight itself.

For most travelers moving between city centers, KTX is 30 minutes to an hour faster door-to-door despite being more than twice as long in the air.

Who Should Choose KTX

KTX is the right choice when the airport transfer would be long.

If you're staying in central Seoul — Myeongdong, Jongno, Hongdae, or anywhere that requires 40 or more minutes to reach Gimpo Airport — that transfer alone erases most of what the flight saves in the air.

KTX is also the right choice when you have checked luggage, when you're traveling with someone and want to sit together, or when your Busan destination is in the city center (Busan Station puts you there; Gimhae Airport doesn't).

And if the KTX is running on Friday — which is when it often sells out first — the lack of boarding cutoff pressure makes KTX much more forgiving when the morning doesn't go exactly to plan.

Who Should Choose the Flight

The flight becomes the better option in specific conditions that move the airport transfer from a liability to a neutral factor.

If you're staying near Hongdae or Hapjeong — close to Gimpo — the airport transfer drops to 20 to 25 minutes. That changes the math significantly. If your destination in Busan is also on the western side near Gimhae Airport, the arrival transfer is short too. In those conditions, the total flight time drops to around 2.5 to 3.0 hours — competitive with or faster than KTX.

The flight also makes sense as a fallback when the Friday KTX midday window is already sold out and the only remaining trains are a 7 AM departure or a 9 PM arrival — neither of which fits a checkout day.

And if you're connecting to another flight from Gimhae Airport, flying into Busan is the obvious structural choice.

The One Question That Decides It

How long does it take to get from your hotel to Gimpo Airport?

Under 30 minutes: the flight is worth comparing seriously. 30 to 45 minutes: the total times are close — check KTX availability and compare. Over 45 minutes: KTX is almost certainly faster door-to-door.

Everything else — price, comfort preference, whether you like trains — comes after that answer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is KTX faster than flying from Seoul to Busan?

Door-to-door, yes — for most travelers staying in central Seoul. The flight is faster in the air, but the airport transfer, check-in, security, and arrival transfer add 2 to 3 hours around it. KTX is typically 30 minutes to an hour faster door-to-door for travelers in central Seoul going to central Busan.

When is the flight actually faster?

When the airport transfer on both ends is short — staying near Gimpo in Seoul and traveling to western Busan near Gimhae. Also when the KTX midday window is sold out on a Friday and the remaining trains don't fit the schedule.

What's the total travel time Seoul to Busan by flight vs KTX?

By flight: 3.5 to 4.5 hours door-to-door from central Seoul to central Busan.
By KTX: 2.5 to 3.0 hours door-to-door from central Seoul to central Busan.
The gap narrows significantly if you're staying close to Gimpo Airport.
