Is Flying Faster Than KTX in Korea? (The 4-Hour Flight Most Travelers Miss)

The Short Answer
No — not door-to-door.
The flight takes one hour in the air. But getting from your Seoul hotel to Gimpo Airport takes 40 to 50 minutes. Check-in and security add another 60 to 90 minutes. Then Gimhae Airport to central Busan adds 30 to 40 minutes after landing.
Door to door: 3.5 to 4.5 hours.
KTX from Seoul Station to Busan Station: 2 hours 30 minutes, with roughly 10 to 20 minutes on each end. Door to door: 2.5 to 3.0 hours.
For most travelers moving between city centers, KTX is 30 minutes to an hour faster than flying.
Why the Flight Feels Faster Than It Is
Booking platforms show aircraft time. That number — one hour — sits next to KTX's two and a half hours, and the comparison looks settled before it starts.
What doesn't appear on the booking screen is the airport transfer, the security queue, the boarding wait, and the ride into Busan from Gimhae. Those segments are just as real as the flight itself. They just don't show up until you're living them.
KTX leaves from Seoul Station — in the city center — and arrives at Busan Station, which is also in the city center. The platform walk is 10 minutes. Boarding is a few minutes more. What the timetable shows is close to what the day actually takes.
The flight saves an hour in the air. The surrounding process spends that hour back.
When Flying Is Actually Faster
The answer changes when the airport transfer gets short.
If you're staying in Hongdae or Hapjeong — close to Gimpo Airport — the transfer drops to 20 to 25 minutes instead of 40 to 50. If your destination in Busan is near Gimhae Airport on the western side, the arrival transfer is short too. In those conditions, the total flight time drops to around 2.5 to 3.0 hours — competitive with KTX, sometimes faster.
Flying also makes sense when the Friday KTX midday window is already sold out and the only remaining trains don't fit the day. And for Seoul to Jeju — where there is no train option — the flight is the only realistic choice.
The Numbers Side by Side
| Segment | Flight | KTX |
|---|---|---|
| To departure point | 40–50 min (central Seoul to Gimpo) | 10–20 min (Seoul to Seoul Station) |
| Pre-departure process | 60–90 min | 5–10 min |
| Journey | 55–65 min | 2h 30min |
| Arrival to city | 30–40 min (Gimhae to central Busan) | 0–10 min |
| Total door-to-door | 3.5–4.5 hours | 2.5–3.0 hours |
Frequently Asked Questions
Is KTX better than flying in Korea?
For most first-time travelers moving between central Seoul and central Busan, yes. KTX is typically 30 minutes to an hour faster door-to-door once airport access, security, and arrival transfer are counted.
Why does a 1-hour flight to Busan take so long?
The flight itself is one hour, but the full day includes getting to Gimpo Airport (40–50 min from central Seoul), check-in and security (60–90 min), the flight, and getting from Gimhae Airport into Busan (30–40 min). That's 3.5 to 4.5 hours total for what looks like a 1-hour trip.
Is the flight from Seoul to Busan ever worth it?
Yes — when the airport transfer is short on both ends, when the KTX midday window is sold out on a Friday, or when the destination in Busan is close to Gimhae Airport. In those specific conditions, the flight can match or beat KTX on total time.
